Campaigners Launch Petitions to Lower UK State Pension Age

Two separate campaigns are urging the Government of the United Kingdom to lower the State Pension age to benefit both retirees and young job seekers. Campaigner Helen Grice launched a petition on June 25, 2026, arguing that reducing the retirement age would encourage older workers to leave the workforce, thereby creating vacancies for unemployed young adults. Her petition remains open until December 25, 2026.

In a separate initiative, Michelle Gill has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition specifically calling to reduce the State Pension age to 65 for all citizens. This proposal highlights that individuals aged 65 to 67 often face limited work options, caring pressures, and poor health. Gill's petition remains open until March 16, 2027.

These efforts contrast with current UK policy, where the State Pension age is 66, with a scheduled increase to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028, and a further planned increase to 68 between 2044 and 2046. Both petitions follow the same government protocol: 10,000 signatures trigger a formal government response, while 100,000 signatures make the proposals eligible for consideration for a parliamentary debate.
