Congress MLAs Boycott Punjab Assembly After Entry Clashes
Congress legislators boycotted the Punjab Vidhan Sabha session on Tuesday following clashes over entry restrictions and the suspension of MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
Congress MLAs boycotted the concluding session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday following a series of clashes and the suspension of party colleague Sukhpal Singh Khaira. Khaira was suspended on Friday after State Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused him of using unparliamentary language and making remarks against the dignity of the Speaker.
Partap Singh Bajwa, the Congress Legislative Party leader, led protests after Congress MLAs, including Pargat Singh, were blocked from entering the assembly premises. This led to an altercation with Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill. While Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan clarified that only suspended members are barred from entry, Bajwa and other legislators walked out of the House.
Outside the assembly, Congress members wore black robes, carried placards, and burned a broom—the election symbol of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party—to protest government failures and demand the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota. Simultaneously, BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu used a bottle of imported liquor to symbolically criticize Mann's recent foreign visit during a heated exchange with AAP MLA Manvinder Singh Giaspura.
