Meta Announces Election Integrity Policies for 2026 Midterms

Meta Platforms Inc. established a new policy framework for the 2026 U.S. midterms focusing on AI disclosure and a ban on late-campaign political ads.

Meta Platforms, Inc. announced a policy framework for the 2026 U.S. midterm elections designed to combat foreign interference and increase transparency. The company will block all new political, electoral, and social issue advertisements during the final week of the campaign to prevent the spread of uncontested claims.

Under the new rules, advertisers must complete an authorization process and include "paid for by" disclaimers. Meta will require the disclosure of AI used to create or alter political content and will deploy detection systems to label AI-generated material. The company plans to penalize organic photorealistic video or audio that has been digitally altered.

To support voter participation, Meta will implement top-of-feed notifications and voting alerts on Facebook and Instagram. The company is also shifting its approach to misinformation by using community notes, which require contributor consensus to provide context for misleading posts, rather than relying on third-party fact-checking.
