At Least 13 Migrants Missing After Boat Sinks Off Tunisia

The Tunisian National Guard is searching for up to 14 missing migrants after a vessel capsized off the coast of Zarzis while sailing toward Italy.

A migrant vessel carrying approximately 15 people capsized 14 nautical miles off the coast of Zarzis, Tunisia, between Friday and Saturday. The boat, which departed from the area between Zarzis and Ben Guerdane, carried mostly young people, including seven members of a single family and a pregnant woman.

Search and rescue operations involving helicopters and naval units have yielded conflicting casualty reports. The Tunisian National Guard reported that one survivor was rescued by a commercial ship and two bodies were recovered and transferred to a hospital on Djerba island. However, the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 13 missing Tunisian nationals and noted that four bodies had been found, though officials have not confirmed if all recovered remains belonged to passengers of this specific vessel.

The tragedy occurs as the International Organization for Migration reports a surge in Mediterranean fatalities, with at least 914 migrants dead or missing in 2026. This increase follows a 2023 migration agreement between Tunisia and the European Union to curb irregular migration. Human rights organizations have called for the EU to suspend this funding, alleging the deal has normalized abuses against asylum seekers.
