Australian Household Spending Flattens Ahead of Rate Hike

Australian household spending remained flat in August, missing growth forecasts just hours before the Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to raise interest rates.

Household spending in Australia remained flat in August, failing to meet economist forecasts of a 0.4% increase. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows annual growth slowed to 6.8% from 7.0%, following a 1.1% rise in July.

The spending patterns were mixed across sectors. Gains were recorded in transport, hotels, cafes, and restaurants, while recreation, culture, clothing, and alcohol saw declines. Non-discretionary spending rose 0.6%, but discretionary spending slipped 0.3%.

These figures were released shortly before the Reserve Bank of Australia is widely expected to raise the cash rate to 4.60%, the highest level since November 2011. While analysts suggest the flat spending data may not change the immediate decision to hike rates, it could influence the tone of the bank's official statement and impact market pricing for November.
