European Heatwaves Cause 43 Billion Euro Economic Loss

Extreme heatwaves across Europe are causing widespread economic losses, particularly within the hospitality and industrial sectors. Moody's Ratings estimates that heatwaves last summer cost the European economy 43 billion euros in lost output, while generating only 500 million euros in insured payouts.

In Padua, Italy, over 80 percent of surveyed hospitality businesses reported turnover declines of approximately 20 percent as customers avoided outdoor spaces. The financial strain is exacerbated by a gap in insurance coverage, as traditional business interruption policies typically require physical property damage rather than the indirect operational disruptions caused by extreme heat.

Several major companies have already flagged weather-related financial hits in their second-quarter earnings reports. These include the French payments firm Worldline, the Italian cement producer Buzzi Unicem, and the Swedish shop-fitting provider Itab Shop Concept.
