S&P 500 Hits Historic Valuation Levels Amid AI Boom
The S&P 500 enters its fifth year of a bull market with valuations reaching levels seen only before the Great Depression and the dot-com bubble.
The S&P 500 is entering the fifth year of a bull market that began in October 2022, with the index surging nearly 120% fueled by the artificial intelligence boom. This growth has pushed the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio above 40, marking the second-highest level in history.
This valuation metric has exceeded 32 only twice previously: before the 1929 Great Depression and during the dot-com bubble, both of which preceded major market corrections. Investors Michael Burry and Ray Dalio warn that the current AI surge exhibits classic signs of a bubble. Burry has taken active positions against the trend by shorting stocks including Nvidia, Micron Technology, and Palantir Technologies.
Other market perspectives suggest that attempting to time these corrections is counterproductive. Some analysts point to historical data indicating that remaining invested through periods of volatility generally produces better long-term returns than trying to anticipate a market crash.
