William Lawrence Wins Michigan's Seventh District Democratic Primary

Progressive organizer and Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence won the Democratic primary for Michigan's Seventh Congressional District on August 4. Lawrence defeated moderate candidates Matt Maasdam and Bridget Brink in a race marked by a split in the centrist vote and significant spending from super PACs. His victory was supported by endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and the Working Family Party.

Lawrence campaigned on a populist platform that includes implementing universal health care, increasing taxes on billionaires, and establishing a 12-month moratorium on new data centers. During the primary, he faced criticism from the Congressional Black Caucus's political organization over 2024 comments regarding Black Democratic leadership. Moderate candidates experienced internal friction after Senator Elissa Slotkin endorsed Maasdam, which upset Brink's supporters.

Lawrence will now challenge Republican incumbent Representative Tom Barrett in the November general election. The seat is currently rated as a tossup by the Cook Political Report. While some Democrats expressed concern that Lawrence's progressive stances on arms sales to Israel and corporate taxation might alienate swing voters in the Lansing area, Lawrence attributes his momentum to voter frustration with economic instability and corporate-funded politicians.
