Patrice Talon Transitions to Senate After Benin Presidency
Patrice Talon assumed the presidency of the senate following a decade of economic growth and democratic decline in Benin.
Former President Patrice Talon assumed the role of president of the senate in August 2026, following a decade in power characterized by a duality of economic expansion and democratic erosion. Between 2016 and May 2026, Talon drove a building boom in Cotonou and established a new industrial zone, contributing to an increase in Benin's annual GDP from 3% to 6%.
This economic progress occurred alongside a sharp decline in civil liberties. Talon implemented strict election laws, co-opted the judiciary to silence dissent, and passed a constitutional amendment that extended the presidential term from five to seven years. These measures coincided with the imprisonment of opposition leader Reckya Madougou and a failed coup attempt in December.
In April 2026, Romuald Wadagni, Talon's hand-picked successor, won the presidential election with over 94% of the vote. While the government highlights infrastructural gains, critics and the Liberal Democrats argue that development lacked transparency and primarily benefited Talon's allies while suppressing political opposition.
