Powerball Jackpot Hits $1 Billion for August 12 Drawing
Powerball increased its estimated jackpot to $1 billion for the August 12 drawing following a surge in ticket sales across the U.S. and United Kingdom.
The Powerball jackpot reached an estimated $1 billion for the drawing on August 12, 2026, marking the largest U.S. lottery jackpot of the year and the eighth-largest in the game's history. The prize grew from $905 million on August 10 to $975 million on August 11, before officials raised the estimate to $1 billion following a review of ticket sales. This milestone is the first billion-dollar jackpot since the game expanded to the United Kingdom on July 21, with British players now contributing to the shared pool via The National Lottery.
While the annuitized prize is $1 billion, the lump-sum cash value is estimated at $433.1 million. This gap is attributed to rising bond yields, as the lottery uses zero-coupon Treasury bonds to fund annuity payments. Financial experts, including John Chichester Jr., advised potential winners to employ professionals to minimize taxes and ensure protection. TurboTax further cautioned lottery pool participants to use written contracts to avoid gift tax complications.
No one has won the grand prize in 44 consecutive drawings since May 2. However, recent drawings produced several million-dollar winners. On August 10, tickets in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, New York, and Texas won between $1 million and $2 million. On August 11, winners in Tennessee, Maryland, and California claimed prizes ranging from $1 million to $2 million. Stephen Durrell noted that ticket sales for the August 11 drawing increased by more than 86% compared to the previous Monday.
