AI Infrastructure Demand Creates Critical Raw Commodity Bottleneck

The rapid expansion of AI is creating a critical shortage of raw commodities like copper and aluminum needed for data centers and power plants.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has created a critical third bottleneck in the technology industry centered on the availability of raw commodities. While the sector previously focused on constraints regarding electricity and advanced semiconductors, the physical infrastructure required for AI—including transmission lines, power plants, and data centers—now demands vast quantities of steel, aluminum, copper, and specialty metals such as germanium and gallium.

Anthony Milewski, founder of The Oregon Group, identified this strategic bottleneck as a result of competing demands from grid modernization, renewable energy, and electric vehicles. Because the mining industry operates on decadal timelines, supply cannot scale to match the monthly cycles of the tech industry.

This misalignment may force technology companies to move upstream to prevent material shortages from stalling infrastructure deployment. Potential strategies include providing project financing, securing long-term offtake agreements, or investing directly in resource producers.
