Home Office Maintains Deportation Order for Long-term Resident

The UK Home Office refuses to lift a deportation order for Tony Hall, a Barbados-born resident of 50 years, citing past criminal convictions.

Tony Hall, a Barbados-born man who has lived in the United Kingdom since 1976, remains in immigration limbo as the Home Office maintains a deportation order against him. Hall was convicted of firearm possession and conspiracy to rob in 2001 and served eight years in prison. A 2010 attempt to deport him failed when Barbados border officials refused him entry, yet the deportation order remains active.

The current legal status prevents Hall from working, renting property, or accessing most government benefits, leaving him destitute and facing potential homelessness. He is required to report to immigration officials every two weeks.

Solicitor Naga Kandiah argues that Hall is a victim of the Windrush scandal and was born a British Citizen of the UK and Colonies, asserting the deportation order was issued in error. However, a Home Office spokesperson stated that Hall's past offenses make him ineligible for the Windrush scheme. Independent Windrush Commissioner Clive Foster has advocated for humanity and dignity in resolving such cases of immigration uncertainty.
