UK Grid Balancing Costs Hit £50 Million in One Day

The National Energy System Operator spent nearly £50 million in one day to balance Great Britain's power grid amid transmission bottlenecks.

The National Energy System Operator spent £47.9 million on Wednesday to balance Great Britain's power grid, driven by severe bottlenecks in power transmission. To manage the imbalance, the operator paid to shut down approximately 9 gigawatts of windfarm capacity in oversupplied areas while simultaneously paying to activate gas and biomass plants and import electricity from Europe to meet regional demand.

These costs, which are passed on to household energy bills, follow a record monthly balancing cost of £505 million in September. The financial spike highlights ongoing delays in a £150 billion power network upgrade intended to improve the flow of electricity from generation sites to consumers.

Parallel to these costs, the operator faces an investigation by the regulator Ofgem. The probe follows whistleblower claims that senior management attempted to cover up a near-blackout during a June heatwave. Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho has accused leadership of risking blackouts to protect the organization's reputation.
