Uber Announces First India Data Centre and Two Tech Centers in Major Expansion

Dara Khosrowshahi used a five-day visit to India to unveil the most significant expansion of Uber's infrastructure in the country, announcing the company's first Indian data centre, two large technology centers, and a strategic bet that India could become Uber's largest global market within a decade. The data centre, developed in partnership with the Adani Group, is expected to go live later this year and will test and deploy Uber's technology, supporting the company's goal to scale global operations from India. Khosrowshahi met Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad to formalize the partnership, which aligns with the conglomerate's broader push into digital infrastructure, including a 1 GW AI-ready data centre platform in Visakhapatnam.

Uber also announced two new engineering centers: a 1.1 million-square-foot, 5,000-seat facility in Bengaluru and a 900,000-square-foot, 4,600-seat center in Hyderabad, both expected to be operational by the end of 2027. The Hyderabad expansion builds on an existing Centre of Excellence employing 600 engineers, and Khosrowshahi expressed interest in establishing a corporate office in the upcoming Bharat Future City. Uber recently infused approximately $330 million into its Indian unit to counter competition from rivals like Rapido, and Khosrowshahi asserted that Uber is innovating faster to maintain its lead.

During the trip, Khosrowshahi met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss investment plans, last-mile connectivity, parking management solutions, and labor reforms for gig workers. He signaled openness to revisiting food delivery in India and noted that robotaxis may not be economically viable in the country for at least five years.
