North Yorkshire Councillor Kevin Foster Resigns From Green Party
Councillor Kevin Foster resigned from the Green Party to sit as an independent, citing a shift in the party's priorities and direction.
North Yorkshire councillor Kevin Foster resigned from the Green Party on October 9, 2026, to sit as an independent representative for Hipswell and Colburn. Foster stated that the party has moved in a different direction and no longer holds the same priorities that attracted him to the organization nine years ago.
While Foster did not explicitly name the Green Party's annual conference in Brighton as the primary cause for his departure, he described the event—where members voted to classify Zionism as a form of racism—as a "major distraction." Despite leaving the party, Foster will continue to serve as the leader of the Green and Independent Group on the North Yorkshire Council.
Arnold Warneken, chair of the North Yorkshire Green Party, expressed disappointment over the resignation but stated that he respects Foster's decision and thanked him for his work within the local branch and the council.
