Tamil Nadu Launches Expanded Free Bus Scheme for Women

C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, reviewed preparations on September 21 for the statewide launch of Vetri Payanam on October 2. The initiative expands the previous Vidiyal Payanam program by extending fare-free commutes beyond ordinary city buses to include Express, Limited Stop Service, Deluxe, Mofussil Ordinary, and Ghat Ordinary buses.

The scheme is projected to benefit approximately 84.32 lakh women daily. It will utilize 12,692 designated government buses, accounting for 69 percent of the total fleet operated by the state's seven transport corporations. The government aims to increase women's economic independence and improve access to healthcare, education, and employment by removing transport cost barriers.

During the review meeting at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure women passengers face no difficulties using the service. The government has already completed the integration of Electronic Ticketing Machines and has scheduled a trial run for September 27 to finalize the rollout.
