Pakistan Security Forces Face Two Terrorist Vehicle Attacks

Security forces in northwestern Pakistan faced two separate vehicle-borne explosive attacks over two days in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. On July 25, a car bomb targeted a police checkpoint and security gathering in the city of Tank. The blast killed 15 people, including 12 soldiers, and damaged a security facility and nearby residential buildings.

On July 26, the Military of Pakistan foiled a second attack in the South Waziristan district. Security personnel destroyed a vehicle laden with explosives before it could breach a check post perimeter, killing four militants, including a suicide bomber. While military sources claimed the action prevented damage to the post, the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation reported that the engagement resulted in the death and injury of several soldiers and a civilian.

International reactions followed the violence. The Government of Iran condemned the Tank attack, with spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei calling for regional cooperation to punish the organizers and financiers of such acts. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expressed solidarity with Pakistan following the South Waziristan incident. The Pakistani military has since launched a sanitization operation to eliminate remaining militants in the region.
