Elon Musk Unveils Flying Tesla Roadster in Texas Demonstration

Elon Musk demonstrated a flying version of the Tesla Roadster using SpaceX thruster technology at a Texas test site to boost investor confidence.

Elon Musk unveiled a flying prototype of the revived Roadster sports car during a demonstration on Thursday night at a Space Exploration Technologies Corp. facility near Waco, Texas. The vehicle utilized underbody suction fans to drive upside down on a curved ramp before using SpaceX cold-gas thrusters to perform a flip and a controlled landing. During the event, the Roadster accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in under a second and leaped over other vehicles, including a Cybertruck and a Semi.

Musk stated that a live audience was necessary to prove the demonstration was not generated by AI, though he admitted before the launch that "success is not guaranteed." While the flying version is unlikely to be sold to the public due to cost, safety, and regulatory hurdles, the event aimed to generate brand enthusiasm following annual sales declines and a stagnant product lineup.

Tesla, Inc. shares rose approximately 5% in premarket trading on Friday following the reveal, contrasting with previous product launches that saw price drops. This rally follows a period of declining profitability, including a second-quarter operating margin of 1.4% and negative free cash flow of roughly $1.1 billion. The event further highlighted the integration of Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX, including their joint semiconductor plant project, Terafab, leading analysts to suggest the two companies may eventually merge into a single super company.
