UK Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge 49% in July 2026
Battery electric vehicle registrations in Britain rose 49% in July, though industry leaders warn that heavy manufacturer discounting to meet government mandates is unsustainable.
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Britain rose 49% in July 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching 43,547 new vehicles. According to data from New AutoMotive and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, BEVs accounted for 27.4% of the new car market during the month, pushing the year-to-date market share to 25.3%. This growth surpasses the adjusted market-wide target of 24.6% and marks the second consecutive month that registrations exceeded the requirements of the national zero-emission vehicle mandate.
The broader new car market grew by 11.7% in July with 156,571 registrations, the best July performance since 2019. This surge is attributed to government purchase incentives, a wider variety of models, and rising fuel costs in Europe triggered by oil shocks from the war in Iran. Autotrader reported that plug-in vehicles have become a mainstream choice, with one in every two new car inquiries in July targeting electrified options.
Despite the growth, Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, warned that the current trajectory is precarious. He stated that manufacturers are hemorrhaging billions in discounts to meet the government's 33% zero-emission vehicle mandate, a practice he describes as unsustainable and a threat to the industry's long-term viability and competitiveness.
