Ken Griffin Donates $3 Billion to Carnegie Mellon University
Ken Griffin is donating $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University to establish a new Miami campus and rename its computer science program.
Citadel CEO Ken Griffin is donating $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, the largest single gift ever given to a U.S. university. The contribution allocates $2 billion to build a 35-acre campus in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, which is expected to enroll roughly 3,500 students. Construction on the Miami site is scheduled to begin next year.
Rather than utilizing traditional academic majors, the Miami campus will focus on grand challenge areas such as national security, human health, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing. The remaining $1 billion of the gift will support projects at the main Pittsburgh campus and the computer science program, which will be renamed in Griffin's honor.
University President Farnam Jahanian stated that artificial intelligence demands a rethink of how the institution educates students and conducts research. Griffin, a Miami resident and GOP megadonor, will join the university's Board of Trustees as part of the agreement.
