Ukrainian Drone Units Defeat U.S. Armored Brigade in Germany

Ukrainian drone units defeated a U.S. Army armored brigade during the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany, prompting the U.S. to increase drone warfare studies in Ukraine.

The 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces, a Ukrainian drone unit known as Nemesis, defeated a U.S. Army armored brigade during the Combined Resolve military exercise held in Germany in April and May 2026. Using reconnaissance and first-person-view drones, the Ukrainian unit easily spotted and eliminated troops and armored vehicles from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

U.S. forces struggled with visibility and concealment to the point that units required re-spawning to maintain the exercise. Army officials observed that while rotating troops struggled, newer Mobile Brigade Combat Teams performed better. The results highlight U.S. vulnerabilities to short-range battlefield drones, mirroring difficulties the military has faced against Iranian drones in the Middle East.

In response to these vulnerabilities, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth increased the number of U.S. personnel deployed to Ukraine to study drone warfare. The United States is also currently testing Ukrainian drones for potential procurement to improve its own capabilities.
