Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy Sidesteps LGBTQ Rights Questions

Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy faced criticism after declining to state an official position on LGBTQ rights during an NBC News interview.

Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy declined to state an official position on LGBTQ equal rights during an October 14 interview for the NBC News series Business in America and the Today show. When pressed by co-anchor Craig Melvin regarding the company's history of opposing same-sex marriage and funding anti-LGBTQ+ groups, Cathy repeatedly pivoted the conversation toward the company's focus on hospitality and food quality.

The interview revisited a 2012 controversy in which former CEO Dan Cathy stated the company supported the biblical definition of the family and opposed same-sex marriage, an admission that triggered nationwide boycotts and protests. While the company's current corporate policies prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and it shifted its charitable giving in 2019 to focus on education, homelessness, and hunger, Cathy maintained that the company's Christian mission remains its anchor.

Social media figures including Katie Couric, Andy Cohen, and Ross Mathews characterized Cathy's responses as evasive. Beyond the social controversy, Cathy discussed business operations for the privately held company, which generates nearly $24 billion in sales across 2,900 locations. He noted an increased demand for high-protein menu items due to the use of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and reaffirmed the company's commitment to remaining closed on Sundays and rejecting shrinkflation.
