Trump Administration Launches Campaign to Dismantle International Criminal Court

The Federal government of the United States has launched a campaign to dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the judicial body issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane and investigator Abdoulaye Seye.

U.S. pressure has already contributed to the withdrawal of Chad and Venezuela from the Rome Statute. The court's authority is further weakened by member states such as Tajikistan and Mongolia, which refused to arrest Putin, and several European nations that have expressed doubt regarding the warrant for Netanyahu.

Internal instability has compounded these geopolitical challenges. Former Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan was ousted by member countries last month following allegations of sexual assault. These combined external pressures and internal scandals threaten the institution's ability to enforce international law against major global powers.
