North Korea Test-Fires Strategic Submarine-Launched Cruise Missiles

North Korea test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles in the East Sea to enhance its underwater combat capabilities.

The Government of North Korea test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles (SLCMs) in the East Sea on October 14, 2026. The North Korea Missile Administration conducted the launches to examine the mobilized posture of underwater combat systems and improve the navy's ability to perform strategic missions.

State media described the missiles as strategic, a term that implies an intent to arm the weapons with nuclear warheads. The tests were overseen by Jang Chang-ha, head of the Missile Administration, and Kim Jong-sik of the Workers' Party Central Committee.

These launches follow a period of intensified weapons demonstrations, including tactical ballistic missile tests on October 12 and hypersonic missile tests conducted in September and early October. The South Korean military has not released specific details regarding the Wednesday launches. The escalation occurs as Kim Jong Un continues to reject diplomatic offers from the United States and South Korea.
