International Tourists Flock to Rural China via Visa-Free Entry

Foreign visitors are increasingly visiting rural China for agrarian experiences, driven by new visa-free policies and extensive infrastructure upgrades under the 14th Five-Year Plan.

International tourists are shifting their focus from major metropolitan hubs like Beijing and Shanghai toward rural China to experience agrarian culture. Visitors are engaging in activities such as plowing fields with water buffalo, picking tea in Yangshuo, and harvesting jasmine flowers in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

This surge is attributed to the Government of China implementing visa-free entry policies and executing the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). These initiatives expanded rural road networks and provided 5G connectivity to 95 percent of administrative villages. Travelers also cited the convenience of high-speed rail and the ubiquity of mobile payments as critical factors for accessing remote areas in Shandong and Guangxi.

Dai Bin, President of the China Tourism Academy, noted that "the improvement of infrastructure such as rural road networks, full coverage of mobile payment services, telecommunications networks, and signage systems, along with the development of new facilities like leisure trails, camping sites and intangible cultural heritage workshops, has boosted the rural areas' appeal to inbound tourists."

Data from the first quarter of 2026 shows 8.32 million visa-free entries for foreign nationals, representing a 29.3 percent year-on-year increase. During the same period, rural tourism destinations recorded 793 million visits and generated 457 billion yuan in revenue, a 10.9 percent increase compared to the previous year.
