Edo State Imposes Movement Restriction for Local Government Elections
The Edo State Police Command restricted all movement on July 11 to secure local government elections involving 12 cleared political parties.
The Edo State Police Command announced a statewide restriction of movement for Saturday, July 11, 2026, to secure local government council elections across 18 local government areas. The order prohibits all vehicular and human movement to protect voters, electoral officials, and sensitive materials. One report states the restriction ends at 3:00 p.m., while two other reports state it continues until 6:00 p.m.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika confirmed the deployment of security operatives to ensure a peaceful process. Exemptions apply to media personnel, accredited observers, emergency responders, security agencies, and officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, which has cleared 12 political parties to contest the seats.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Edo Sector Command announced it will not participate in the elections. State Sector Commander Preye Bedford cited a lack of official invitation from stakeholders as the reason for the command's absence. Due to the movement restrictions, the FRSC is suspending routine operations and will monitor the situation to determine if traffic control measures are needed.
