SpaceX Stock Volatility Follows AI and Starlink Expansion
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. faces stock price volatility and profitability challenges despite massive revenue growth in its AI and satellite connectivity divisions.
Shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. have experienced significant volatility since the company's initial public offering in June 2026. The stock peaked above $225 before settling near $150, bringing the company's market capitalization to just under $2 trillion.
While the company is recognized for space launches, its current operations are primarily driven by the Starlink connectivity division and its AI division, xAI. The AI division, which owns the Grok AI model, reported a 213% revenue increase in the second quarter of 2026. To support this expansion, the company invested nearly $16 billion in AI capital expenditures.
Despite these gains, SpaceX remains unprofitable. Management has set a target net income margin of 45%, though analysts consider a 30% margin by 2030 to be a more realistic goal. Some market analysts argue the stock is overpriced, suggesting that the current valuation may be difficult to justify even if the company maintains a 40% compound annual growth rate.
