Green Party Investigates Member Over Al-Qaeda Ties

The Green Party launched an internal investigation into member Lubna Speitan following reports of her ties to a convicted al-Qaeda operative.

The Green Party has launched an internal investigation into member Lubna Speitan after reports surfaced regarding her relationship with Minh Quang Pham, a convicted al-Qaeda operative. U.S. court documents from 2015 identify Speitan as a close friend of Pham, who was imprisoned in the United States for supporting al-Qaeda and a plot to attack passengers at Heathrow Airport. Speitan previously provided written testimony in Pham's defense, calling him one of the most trustworthy people she had known.

The investigation follows a controversial Green Party conference in Brighton, where Speitan authored a motion that defined Zionism as a racist ideology and called for a single democratic Palestinian state. The motion, which passed 1,022 to 813, also expressed support for armed struggle for Palestinian liberation.

Party leadership and several MPs have criticized the motion. MP Adrian Ramsay described the measure as wrong in principle. Speitan has rejected the allegations regarding her ties to Pham, calling them defamatory and nonsense claims.
