Kansas Congressional Candidates Debate Housing and Ethics in Hays

Republican Tracey Mann, Democrat Lauren Reinhold, and Libertarian Steven Jacob debated housing affordability and stock trading bans at a forum at Fort Hays State University.

Candidates for Kansas’ 1st congressional district debated housing affordability, immigration, and government ethics during a forum on October 6 at Fort Hays State University. Tracey Mann, the Republican candidate, proposed streamlining construction permitting and reducing regulations to lower costs. Democrat Lauren Reinhold argued that increasing wages and implementing federal programs are the only ways to make homes affordable for young people.

Libertarian candidate Steven Jacob focused on the federal debt, characterizing national spending as a primary barrier to affordability and a threat to national security. The candidates diverged on education and immigration, with Reinhold supporting free community college and comprehensive immigration reform, while Jacob opposed student loan relief.

Despite these policy differences, all three candidates reached a consensus on government ethics, agreeing that members of Congress should be banned from trading individual stocks. The forum, hosted by the Chamber in Hays and Fort Hays State University, addressed other regional concerns including rural health care, agricultural costs, and the impact of artificial intelligence ahead of the November 3 election.
