Indonesia Stocks Plunge as MSCI Warns of Index Removal

President Prabowo Subianto faces a severe economic crisis as Indonesia's stock market suffers its worst plunge since 1998 following warnings from MSCI.

Indonesia is experiencing a severe economic crisis marked by a plummeting stock market, rising inflation, and a rupiah that has breached 18,000 to the dollar. The country's stocks suffered their largest one-day plunge since the 1998 Asian financial crisis after MSCI warned it might drop Indonesia from its benchmark indexes due to a lack of enforcement against market manipulation.

Prabowo Subianto has compounded the turmoil through the implementation of costly populist programs, including a $30 billion annual free-meal initiative, and the nationalization of assets. These actions have shaken investor confidence and contributed to a negative outlook downgrade from credit agencies Moody's and Fitch.

Internal instability has escalated with the abrupt removal of key policymakers, including the central bank governor and Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who was fired by phone. The crisis is further reflected in the domestic labor market, where youth unemployment currently hovers around 17 percent.
