Google Builds $15 Billion AI Datacenter Hub in India

Google is constructing a $15 billion hyperscale AI datacenter hub in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, specifically around the capital Vizakhapatnam and the village of Tarluvada. Partnering with the Adani Group, the technology company is building three separate datacenters. While the project is publicly described as having a 1GW capacity, state environmental clearances reveal a higher capacity of 2.51GW, which could consume more than 30% of the state's current energy supply.

The project has faced significant opposition from local villagers and activists. Protesters allege forced land acquisitions and broken promises regarding job creation and replacement land. Environmental concerns include deforestation and increased local heat. In response, the Human Rights Forum has filed petitions with the National Green Tribunal and the Andhra Pradesh high court to challenge the rapid approval process.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has defended the hub as essential for digital competitiveness, providing approximately $2.2 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to support the development.
