Nvidia Controls 90 Percent of Discrete GPU Market

Nvidia Inc. controls 90 percent of the discrete GPU market as of the second quarter of 2026, maintaining a near-duopoly alongside AMD, which holds an 8 percent share. Both companies have shifted their primary focus toward the data center market to support the training and inference of AI algorithms and large language models.

Nvidia maintains its competitive lead through energy-efficient GPUs, proprietary NVLink interconnect technology, and the CUDA software ecosystem, which increases customer stickiness. In the latest quarter, data center revenue accounted for 92 percent of Nvidia's total top line.

AMD competes by offering chips with higher memory bandwidth and lower costs specifically suited for AI inference. While AMD has also pivoted toward AI, its data center revenue represents a smaller portion of its business, accounting for 58 percent of its latest quarterly revenue.
