India and Germany Expand Energy Partnership for 20th Anniversary

India and Germany are expanding their energy cooperation to prioritize green hydrogen, battery storage, and critical minerals during the 20th anniversary of the Indo-German Energy Forum.

The Government of India and the Federal Government of Germany expanded their energy cooperation to include green hydrogen, critical minerals, battery storage, and grid expansion. The announcement coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF), celebrated on November 4, 2026, at the German Embassy in New Delhi.

Established in 2006 by Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the forum is anchored by India's Ministry of Power and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The partnership has evolved from integrating renewable energy into power plants to developing the Indo-German Green Hydrogen Roadmap. Current priorities include creating industrial value chains and institutional IP-sharing frameworks to secure mutual energy independence.

German Ambassador Jasper Wieck described the forum as a success story that has built mutual trust and strong networks. Gunther Grathwohl of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy noted that green hydrogen represents the next frontier for the partnership, emphasizing the need to align regulatory standards and de-risk investments to enable large-scale sustainable energy trade.
