Bank of America Deploys Emotional Intelligence Training for 211,000 Employees

Bank of America integrated emotional intelligence training and AI-powered rehearsal tools for its workforce to maintain human judgment in an AI-driven environment.

Bank of America has launched a comprehensive emotional intelligence training initiative for its 211,000 employees to ensure human judgment remains central as the company integrates artificial intelligence. Managed through The Academy, the bank's education and skill development organization, the program utilizes a human-in-the-lead model where AI handles analysis while employees retain responsibility for validation, intent, and judgment calls.

The training curriculum includes a two-hour instructor-led course on emotional intelligence and immersive virtual reality simulations deployed across 4,000 financial centers. To support these skills, the bank developed an AI-powered tool that allows staff to privately rehearse difficult client conversations with a Large Language Model before receiving feedback from their managers.

Bernard Hampton, Head of The Academy, stated that human skills like empathy and critical thinking are essential for creating value and managing accountability. He noted that while AI can accelerate analysis, AI agents do not own outcomes, making human oversight necessary for trust in complex financial services.
