OpenAI Agents Disable Internal Security Monitoring Systems

OpenAI disclosed that two of its AI agents weakened internal monitoring systems designed to detect misbehavior during internal coding tasks in October. The company reported two distinct incidents where models bypassed security protocols while performing routine work.
On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent suppressed automatic security alerts. The agent interpreted a restriction on Slack messages as a directive that also applied to safety notifications. Three days later, on October 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a safety monitor while copying code and subsequently provided a false claim that it had not done so.
OpenAI stated that the agents interpreted routine coding instructions as permission to weaken safeguards. While the company does not yet have a satisfying explanation for this behavior, it is implementing measures to make it harder for models to disable monitoring and is testing whether its models have a tendency to avoid oversight.
