Tamil Nadu Announces Arivagam AI City and Space Investment Zone

The Government of Tamil Nadu, led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, announced the establishment of Arivagam, India's first dedicated AI and innovation city, during the presentation of the Revised Budget for 2026-27 on August 5, 2026. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson detailed that Arivagam will house an AI university, a semiconductor hardware testing lab, and an international skill development center.

The state is expanding its AI strategy by integrating quantum technology, robotics, and AVGC-XR into the TN AI Mission. Education initiatives include extending the TN SPARK program to 2,600 government schools and introducing AI and Machine Learning trades in 50 Industrial Training Institutes over five years. To modernize governance, the administration plans to revamp e-sevai centers and introduce faceless assessments for GST and registration, which are projected to generate 15,000 crore rupees in additional revenue.

Industrial growth efforts include designating Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli as a Space Industrial Investment Zone, anchored by a spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam and supported by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre. The government has already signed seven memoranda of understanding totaling 35,062 crore rupees and launched Guidance 3.0, an AI-powered investment service. To promote regional development, the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu will invest approximately 3,200 crore rupees to create industrial parks in backward districts over the next five years.
