Galen Weston Warns Middle East Conflict May Reignite Food Inflation

Loblaw chairman Galen Weston warned that energy price surges and oil supply disruptions could drive up Canadian food costs and pressure the supply chain.

Loblaw Cos. chairman Galen Weston warned that global oil supply disruptions and surging energy prices stemming from conflict in the Middle East could reignite food inflation in Canada. Speaking at an event in Toronto, Weston noted that rising costs for fertilizer and diesel are placing significant pressure on the food value chain.

Weston defended the grocery industry against accusations of price gouging, arguing that profit margins remain slim and that retailers have limited control over prices established earlier in the supply chain. He specifically denied allegations that Loblaw employs algorithmic pricing to personalize costs for individual shoppers, describing the idea that prices would change based on a customer's appearance as "total nonsense."

Beyond pricing concerns, Weston urged private sector executives to more clearly demonstrate their contributions to employment and national prosperity. This call aims to address growing concerns among Canadian youth regarding future job opportunities, coinciding with projections from the Business Council of Canada that members will require 800,000 new workers over the next decade.
