Jay Clayton Warns of Foreign AI Espionage Threats
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned that foreign adversaries are using AI to amplify espionage threats against U.S. digital infrastructure.
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned that foreign commercial and state-sponsored espionage are active threats as the global race for artificial intelligence dominance intensifies. Speaking on CNBC, Clayton stated that AI amplifies cybersecurity risks to U.S. digital infrastructure and critical systems.
Clayton cited the case of Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI employee and Saudi national, as evidence of the lengths actors will go to challenge U.S. leadership. Alfozan was charged with intercepting oral communications after allegedly installing a recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI.
To address these vulnerabilities, Clayton announced the creation of three subcommittees under a new White House AI task force. These groups will focus on reporting and response, critical infrastructure assessment, and law enforcement. Clayton emphasized that the U.S. must maintain a technical advantage over adversaries, specifically naming China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
