Bank of England Economist Questions Market Rate Hike Expectations

Chief Economist Huw Pill expressed skepticism over investor predictions that the Bank of England will implement four interest rate hikes over the next year.

Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill questioned on Wednesday whether market expectations for four 25 basis-point interest rate hikes over the next year are appropriate. Speaking at a Citi event during International Monetary Fund meetings in Bangkok, Pill suggested the response needed to contain inflation might not be as large as current investor pricing indicates.

The Bank of England has maintained its key rate at 3.75% since December, even as the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank raised borrowing costs following energy price spikes caused by the U.S.-Iran war. While Pill and two other members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted for a rate increase in September, a majority led by Governor Andrew Bailey opted for no change to await clearer data on how the conflict is affecting inflation.

Pill previously argued that policymakers should not wait for clarity on the conflict's impact, though he noted that internal differences within the committee have narrowed due to inflationary risks. Governor Bailey has warned that while inflation pressure remains subdued, the situation becomes more difficult the longer the conflict persists. Investors currently view a November rate hike as nearly certain, with three additional increases expected by September 2027.
