Mitsotakis Unveils €2 Billion Economic Support Package in Greece

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced an economic support package worth approximately €2 billion during his annual speech in Thessaloniki. The initiative targets the cost-of-living crisis through tax cuts, energy cost relief, and financial aid for the self-employed and pensioners.

The announcement arrives as the New Democracy party maintains a lead in polls ahead of national elections scheduled for the spring, though the party may face challenges in forming a one-party government. Alongside the immediate relief measures, Mitsotakis outlined a broader economic agenda extending to 2030, emphasizing adherence to the European Commission's fiscal framework to maintain market credibility.

To strengthen its financial standing, Greece intends to repay nearly €13 billion of its debt obligations early this year. This move leverages a budget primary surplus that is expected to exceed 2026 targets. These fiscal efforts align with a positive outlook from Rating and Investment Information, Inc., which affirmed Greece's rating and indicated that further upgrades depend on the continuation of economic revitalization and fiscal consolidation under the next administration.
