United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Details Productivity Philosophy
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby rejects traditional executive hustle in favor of a routine centered on sleep, reading, and limited meeting hours.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby detailed a productivity philosophy that prioritizes cognitive effort over a busy schedule. In an interview with Business Insider, Kirby stated that his primary role is to "think hard" rather than "work hard," rejecting the idea that executive value is tied to the volume of hours worked.
To maintain low stress levels, Kirby caps his daily meetings at four hours and avoids slide presentations in favor of direct discussions. His daily routine includes 8.5 hours of sleep without an alarm, a morning workout, and three hours of reading while walking, which helps him average over 20,000 steps per day. He dedicates his evenings to his children.
Based in Texas, Kirby manages the airline while traveling frequently to Chicago and Washington, D.C., averaging three flights per week. He has served as the leader of United Airlines since 2020.
