Digi Yatra Launches International Trials at Seven Indian Airports
The Digi Yatra Foundation is expanding its biometric identity platform to international departures at seven Indian airports starting November 1, 2026.
The Digi Yatra Foundation will launch international passenger trials at seven Indian airports on November 1, 2026. The program enables eligible Indian nationals with e-passports to use biometric authentication and digital identity credentials at terminal entries, security hold areas, and boarding gates. The trials will span airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar, supporting passengers on Air India and select IndiGo flights.
Cochin International Airport Limited became the first in India to implement the platform for international processing, with the first passenger using the facility for an IndiGo flight to the Maldives. In Bengaluru, beta app trials are already live at Kempegowda International Airport for routes to London, Malé, and Kuala Lumpur. To participate, passengers scan their e-passport's Machine Readable Zone and chip via NFC through the Digi Yatra app and complete a selfie verification.
While the system reduces repetitive identity checks, it does not replace mandatory immigration, emigration, or airline document verification. Alongside the rollout, the foundation released a redesigned mobile application featuring a structured credential wallet. Cochin International Airport developed its e-boarding software in-house and intends to provide consultancy services to other airports to assist with similar technology architecture.
