South Africa Deploys Multi-Agency Framework to Manage Migration Surge

The South African government is using a coordinated multi-agency system to process tens of thousands of migrants and repatriate undocumented foreign nationals.

The South African government is currently managing a surge in migration, with tens of thousands of individuals moving through its administrative systems over several weeks. To address this influx, the state has implemented a multi-agency framework designed to coordinate border security, visa issuance, and the repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals.

The process begins with identification conducted by the Border Management Authority, the Department of Home Affairs, or the South African Police Service. Once identified, individuals undergo status verification and administrative detention. Repatriation only occurs after the government confirms the individual's nationality and secures travel clearance from the country of origin, a step that requires diplomatic coordination via the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

To maintain the rule of law, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development provides legal oversight. This ensures that all immigration enforcement and deportation actions comply with constitutional rights.
