Denmark Reopens Embassy in Damascus After 14-Year Closure
Denmark re-established its diplomatic presence in Damascus and pledged $76 million for Syrian recovery efforts during an embassy reopening ceremony on August 31.
The Government of Denmark reopened its embassy in Damascus on August 31, 2026, ending a 14-year suspension of diplomatic activities that began during the Syrian civil war. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani presided over the ceremony.
During the event, Rasmussen announced that Denmark allocated an additional $76 million this year to support stabilization, early recovery efforts, and the return of refugees. This diplomatic move follows a broader trend of normalization since the toppling of Bashar Assad in December 2024, with Germany, France, Britain, and Spain also re-establishing ties with the country.
Minister al-Shaibani described the reopening as an important step in Syria's return to the international stage. He stated that the move encourages other European countries to follow suit and invest in Syria.
