Venezuela Inflation Surges as Government Seeks UK Gold Reserves
Venezuela's monthly inflation hit 19.9% in July following devastating earthquakes, prompting the government to seek $4 billion in gold reserves held in the United Kingdom.
Monthly inflation in Venezuela surged to 19.9% in July, rising from 13.8% in June, according to the central bank. This spike brings year-on-year inflation to 575.9%. Authorities attribute the economic volatility to the disruption of goods distribution following twin earthquakes at the end of June that killed more than 6,000 people.
Jorge Rodríguez, chief of the National Assembly, announced that the government and lawmakers will prioritize reconstruction efforts for electricity, healthcare, and housing. To fund these projects, Venezuela is seeking the recovery of approximately $4 billion in gold reserves, totaling roughly 31 metric tons, currently held in the Bank of England.
The Bank of England has historically refused to release the bullion due to disputes over the legitimacy of President Nicolás Maduro's government. These assets remain subject to legal battles in British courts, despite the fact that Maduro was captured by the United States in January.
