Tech Oversight Project Urges Democrats to Target Data Center Subsidies

The Tech Oversight Project is urging Democratic candidates to campaign against AI data center subsidies as governors in Ohio and Illinois pause tax incentives.

The Tech Oversight Project released a memo on October 5, 2026, advising Democratic candidates to target the costs of AI-driven data centers in their final midterm election messages. The watchdog group argues that major technology companies receive billions in subsidies while taxpayers face increased household bills and limited long-term job growth.

Sacha Haworth, the group's founder, suggests that Democrats frame the issue as a demand for AI companies to pay for their own power consumption. The group claims that tech companies have used federal and state subsidies to build unpopular facilities, leaving taxpayers to cover the costs.

The issue has gained traction across the political spectrum. The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned that data center developments could become a political liability for candidates such as Senator Jon Husted of Ohio. In response to growing public backlash, Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio suspended state tax exemptions for data center developers in May, and Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois paused state incentives in July.
