Tesla Pivots to Physical AI and Robotics Company
Tesla is transitioning from electric vehicle manufacturing to a Physical AI and robotics firm, converting its Fremont plant to produce Optimus humanoid robots.
Tesla, Inc. is undergoing a strategic transformation to pivot from an electric vehicle manufacturer into a vertically integrated Physical AI and robotics company. The company is discontinuing production of the Model S and Model X to convert its Fremont facility into a dedicated manufacturing hub for Optimus humanoid robots, targeting a long-term output of one million units annually.
Tesla expects to integrate Optimus robots into its internal factories in 2026 before moving toward external commercialization. This shift follows a 10% drop in automotive revenue, which fell to $69.5 billion in 2025. To offset this decline, the company is leveraging its energy generation and storage division, which reported $12.8 billion in revenue after deployments surged 48% year-over-year to 46.7 GWh.
Concurrent with its hardware pivot, the company is expanding its software ecosystem. Tesla is transitioning Full Self-Driving to a subscription-based model for its 1.1 million users and continuing to advance the autonomous Cybercab initiative.
