Democratic Midterm Sweep Triggers Tesla and SpaceX Stock Decline

Elon Musk faces financial and regulatory setbacks after a Democratic landslide victory in the U.S. midterms impacts Tesla and SpaceX share prices.

Shares of Elon Musk's companies, Tesla, Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), tumbled following a Democratic landslide victory in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Tesla shares fell approximately 5% and SpaceX shares dropped nearly 7% as investors reacted to the Republican Party's worst defeat in 50 years. The market decline occurred despite SpaceX reporting strong third-quarter results, including a 162% revenue increase to $14.6 billion and net income of $4.4 billion.

Musk, a White House adviser who spent approximately $700 million to support Republican candidates, saw his preferred slate lose every statewide race in Texas. The election of Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa introduces immediate regulatory risks for Musk's operations. Hinojosa has proposed a moratorium on data center construction to protect water supplies and the power grid, directly threatening SpaceX's $119 billion Terafab mega-project in Grimes County, which aims to add 10GW of AI compute by late 2027.

Beyond Texas, Democrats secured governorships in other AI infrastructure hubs, including Ohio, Georgia, and Arizona. Investors fear the Democratic mandate will lead to tighter artificial intelligence regulations and may obstruct a proposed merger between Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX. In response to terrestrial regulatory pressures regarding property rights and electricity, Musk has suggested that "Data centres in space looking pretty appealing right now."
