Mistral AI Launches Open-Weight Model Family to Rival AI Leaders
Mistral AI released the Mistral 3 family of 10 open-weight models designed for enterprise tasks and edge device applications.
The French AI startup Mistral AI launched the Mistral 3 family of open-weight models on December 2, 2025, to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI Inc. and Google. The release includes 10 models divided into two primary categories: the multimodal and multilingual Mistral Large 3, built for advanced enterprise tasks, and Ministral 3, a suite of nine smaller models.
Mistral AI optimized the Ministral 3 models to run on a single GPU, enabling offline deployment in robotics, drones, and edge devices. Co-founder Guillaume Lample noted that while businesses often start with large closed-source models, they frequently move toward fine-tuned small models to improve speed and reduce costs.
To integrate these models into physical AI applications, Mistral AI is collaborating with partners including Stellantis, Helsing, and Singapore's Home Team Science and Technology Agency.
