Kerala Orders Probe Into Failed Lionel Messi Visit

Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced an investigation into alleged financial irregularities and misuse of government machinery during a failed attempt to host Lionel Messi in Kerala.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced an investigation into the previous LDF government's failed attempt to bring Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team to Kerala. The probe follows a Sports Department report alleging serious irregularities, including the granting of an agreement to a private organization without evaluating its financial capacity or market value.

Sports Minister O. J. Janeesh alleged that government machinery, including the Chief Secretary and the Greater Cochin Development Authority, was misused to benefit a private event management company. The current administration claims approximately Rs 14 lakh in public funds were spent, including on a trip to Spain, and has raised questions regarding the disappearance of Rs 126 crore provided by a sponsor. Chief Minister Satheesan also highlighted suspected GST evasion related to sponsorship payments, claiming previous investigations were paralyzed.

Former Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman rejected these claims, asserting that the government suffered no financial loss because the agreement was between the Argentina Football Association and the sponsor. He maintained that all prescribed procedures were followed. Meanwhile, Tourism and Culture Minister P C Vishnunadh stated that the public was betrayed and misled by the promises of the event.
